What Does And Does Not Cause Acne?

Many people have suffered from acne in their lives. Although very common, this skin condition can cause self esteem issues because of the negative connotations associated with it. In addition to these negative connotations, many people have misconceptions regarding what causes this afflictioin. We should discuss what leads to an outbreak of acne so we can better understand how to treat it.
Outbreaks Caused By Hormones
The presense of extra hormones in the body have often been linked to acne outbreaks. This can mean that for women, outbreaks can be more severe during one point in the menstrual cycle than during other times. Acne outbreaks often happen to boys and girls during puberty because the body produces extra hormones at this time. An increase in stress can also cause acne as stress produces more hormones.
Dirt Is Not A Culprit
Blackheads, those little black spots in the skin, often appear with acne on the face. While this looks like it may be the result of having a dirty face, it is not true. Those black spots are usually keratin which is the same thing that makes up skin and hair cells. Unshed skin cells blocking your pores are the reason these black spots often show. This is common and really reflects a symptom and not a cause.
Bacteria
The cause of acne is small bacteria that infect clogged pores. The bacteria cause an inflammation which is usually reddened skin or pimples. The whiteheads that form come from your immune systems response. The whitehead means your body is actively working to elminate the bacteria.
Is Food A Contributor?
The degree to which food contributes to acne is still a hotly debated topic. While old-fashioned suggestions for preventing outbreaks includes cutting out things such as chocolate and fried foods, studies have not proved that easing up on consuming either definitely helps. Although doctors are not sure of the reason, many suspect the hormones in milk to be a cause of acne. There have also been studies that indicate that cultures that have fewere people eat refined sugar have fewer cases of acne. However, since acne outbreaks can also be determined by genetics, this is not absolutly clear. However, with this information at your fingertips, perhaps you will better understand what can and can’t cause outbreaks of this skin problem.
