Top 3 Acne Myths

Posted on April 26th, 2009 | by admin |

Are you one of those acne patients that depend treating their condition on several acne myths? If you think you already know everything about acne well, guess what? Not all beliefs regarding the causes or treatment of this skin condition can be considered as fact. Why? Here are the top three myths that most people believe in and the busted reasons behind them:

Myth no. 1: Poor hygiene causes acne. If you believe this myth, and wash your face very often, you are actually making the condition worse. Dirt or skin oils do definitely not cause acne. Vigorous washing and scrubbing on the face will actually irritate the skin and make the problem worse. The best approach to hygiene and acne is washing your face gently twice a day with a mild soap, pat until dry and use an appropriate acne treatment given by the doctor.

Myth no. 2: Diet affects acne growth. Studies have not found any connection between diet and acne. In other words, chocolate, french fries, and pizza don’t cause acne. Although eating a lot of sugary, fatty foods is never a good idea, researches show that no specific food has been proven to directly cause acne.  Every case is different, though. Some people might notice their breakouts are worse after eating this kind of food. In this case, just stay away from it.

Myth no. 3: Wearing makeup prevents having a clear skin. This is certainly untrue: as long as the cosmetics are nonacnegenic or hypoallergenic, they should not cause breakouts. In fact, some makeup now contains benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid, which help fight acne. If suffering from moderate to severe acne, it is best to talk to the dermatologist about the appropriate cosmetics to use.

However, believing on acne myths as long as they are not harmful is not wrong. The point is, you also have to know and thoroughly understand the truism behind every myth you follow.
