Natural Shampoo and Secret Ingredients

Posted on July 28th, 2009 | by lose_spots |

You may use natural shampoo for many reasons. Many people use it because they like living a green lifestyle. Others find that natural ingredients lead to healthier hair. Natural shampoo products are often easier on dyed hair. Finally, you might like natural shampoos because they frequently double as soothing body washes.

But the word natural can be used deceptively. Sometimes it can just mean natural ingredients. Natural ingredients are just about anything derived from nature. This means that a shampoo might contain a few natural ingredients and a lot of unnatural ones. A few preservatives and even dyes are generally okay. If you have sensitive skin though, then you may have trouble with colors and fragrances. The serious ingredients to look for are the ones that may actually undo the positive benefits of the real natural ingredients.

Always watch for laureth- or lauryl sulfate. This makes shampoo foam. However, in addition it strips hair. The result is hair that is brittle and weak. Also, it will destroy color treatments. Lightened and dulled hair is the result of excessive lauryl sulfate use. When you are checking ingredients avoid anything with the words lauryl or laureth.

Always also look out for sulfides and sulfur. These ingredients are common in dandruff shampoos. Technically, you could argue that sulfur is actually a natural ingredient. However, it can exacerbate some types of skin conditions that cause dandruff. If you choose to use a sulfur based shampoo, keep it out of your eyes. Your hair may also be drier than usual.

Natural shampoos tend to share common characteristics:

* They do not have a lot of ingredients - Most of the ingredients in shampoos are artificial. Natural shampoos tend to have just a soap base and a few other ingredients.

* You get little foam with natural shampoo - This is because they lack the foaming agents we discussed earlier.

* They may contain ingredients that you would see in your kitchen - You might see apple cider vinegar, herbs and baking soda. In fact many people actually wash their hair with baking soda, apple cider vinegar and water.

If your hair is perfect and you love your shampoo, stick with it. However, if you are looking for a new natural shampoo, make sure that you are getting the real deal. The secret ingredients can seriously damage your hair. Just be careful that your natural shampoo is the real deal before you start shampooing.
